Deep in the heart of China, we met a local volunteer leader at a small church who told us this story about his family. He was the 2nd to youngest of 9 siblings and his parents died while he was still a small child. He lived with his oldest brother and sister-in-law, who were Christians. This dear man mentioned that his brother had actually hand copied the entire Bible so he could share with the family! “Do you want to see it?” He didn’t have to ask twice.
We discovered that his brother had passed in 2017 and his sister-in-law lived close by. She had received Jesus at the age of 54 and is now 84 years old, too lame to walk to church. She still had stacks of a hand-written Bible opened to the book of Psalms near her bed, and was excited that we wanted to see the copies. She mentioned that they attended the nearby Christian Church starting in 1986, after opening 2 years earlier. Besides the full Bible, her husband had also written out sermon notes in a group of notebooks, still bound together. Such sweetness of spirit poured from this lady who was so excited to greet us and to show us her husband’s work.
Due to his faithfulness and effort, the entire extended family now knows the Lord Jesus Christ. Praise God for the devotion this family showed to others! What an affirmation of the hunger for God’s Word that exists in the hearts of the Chinese Christians.
